Established in 1971. Originally founded in 1971 during the vibrant era of gay liberation, Seagull Salon took inspiration from Richard Bach's beloved novel, Jonathan Livingston Seagull. It proudly stood as NYC's pioneering unisex barber shop, setting a trend that reverberated across the country. Through multiple ownership changes, Seagull transformed from a quirky barbershop into a cutting-edge hair salon, offering a spectrum of color services and innovative haircuts. Shaun Surething, a Lead Stylist and freelance writer, and Johanna Fateman, a Writer Musician and regular Artforum contributor, took the helm in 2006. With their vision, Seagull now caters to the discerning cultural tastes of the New York community, delivering exceptional hair services and more.
