We reserved 6 months before, and fortune favored us! Our guide/pilot Alex was kind, knowledgeable, and patient! Upon landing, we were welcomed by a mother bear and her 3 cubs. The weather was delightful, 60 degrees and sunny! Make sure to plan your visit around the fish run schedule! Remember to eat before heading out as there is no food available on the trail; you can store food at the Ranger station. It was a bit buggy, so I suggest bringing a bug net as bug spray might not be effective. We highly recommend Alaska Bear Adventure!
What an unexpectedly fantastic journey. The flight to Karmai was breathtaking, with clear skies allowing us to soar through the mountain passes. Upon landing on the beach, we had the incredible opportunity to walk within 40 feet of over a dozen brown bears. AJ, our pilot, was an exceptional guide to these magnificent creatures. The return flight was equally picturesque. It was truly a complete experience from takeoff to landing.
This was undoubtedly the most incredible experience during my 10-day stay in Alaska. It may be costly, but it's truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Within 5-10 minutes of walking, we encountered 2 bears passing right in front of us, and shortly after, we were just 20 feet away from a mother bear fishing with her two adorable cubs. AJ, our pilot/guide, was well-informed, respectful, and a pleasure to converse with. I never felt unsafe, even with bears just a few feet away. After the ground excursion, there was one more exciting surprise - on the return flight, we flew right beside an active volcano and witnessed the vent emitting steam above the glacier near the bay where we had explored. Every aspect of the adventure was awe-inspiring. I would recommend wearing water-resistant clothing as there are areas of deep mud to navigate, so dressing in layers based on the weather is advisable!
