Albemarle Sweet Shop is a family-owned bakery with a rich history dating back to 1922 when it was established as the Albemarle Bakery on King Ave. In 1959, the bakery relocated next door and was rebranded as the Albemarle Bake Shop. In 1972, under new ownership, it transformed into the Albemarle Sweet Shop. Remaining at 128 King Ave., another ownership change took place in 1994. In April 2000, the bakery was taken over by the current family owners. Celebrating the 51st anniversary of its rebranding as the Albemarle Sweet Shop on September 16, 2023, the bakery made a significant move to 310 S. Second St. Known for their signature treats like Creme Horns, Fruit Bars, Sugar Cookies, Birthday Cake, Custard Pies, Iced Sugar Cookies, assorted cookies, and Clown Cookies, Albemarle Sweet Shop invites visitors to stop by and indulge in their delectable offerings when in town.

I visited this bakery with a friend to try out their baked goods. Unfortunately, my initial impression was quite underwhelming. The selection was limited to turnovers, cookies, and a few cupcakes, despite the spacious setting. When I sought assistance regarding the cupcake flavors, the clerk seemed unenthusiastic and reluctant to help. I had to insist that she come over to address my questions, which was rather off-putting. After selecting two cupcakes, my friend and I sat outside to enjoy them, but they turned out to be bland and lacking in flavor, except for the frosting. Although I had hoped to support a local business, the subpar customer service and mediocre products have deterred me from returning.

A bustling establishment is always a positive sign, and it was certainly true in this case. The take-a-number system, a reminiscent feature from my time in California in 1980, was still in place and proved to be an efficient way to serve customers. During our visit, four of us sampled each other's orders, and we were all impressed with the quality of the treats. Don't miss out on the chance to visit this gem.

This bakery is AMAZING! We had the chance to try a variety of treats and each one was absolutely delicious. From the coconut cake to the red velvet cupcake, peanut butter cookie, m&m cookie, sugar cookie, and brownie - every bite was fantastic. But the standout item for us was definitely the creme horn. It was simply divine. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, and the prices were very reasonable. Even though we live 45 minutes away, we are already planning on making monthly trips to satisfy our sweet cravings. It's just that good! We'll make sure to snap some photos next time, although we couldn't resist digging in before we could even take any - it was that good!
